Genesis 1:1 Bible Verse Commentary
The artist is reflected in every work of art he creates. Bits about his past, his morals and his aesthetics can be gleaned from the study of his art. In Genesis 1:1 we are taught that God is the ultimate artist. Every sunset, every flower and every stunning mountaintop vista ever painted was first created by the hand of God himself. Even the people that populate our planet are as much the handiwork of the Lord as they are the creations of their own biological parents.
Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
This bible verse should inspire Christians of all denominations to view
the environment in which we live as a work of art and not just a
resource put here for our pleasure and consumption. Everyone could agree
that it would be tragic to see the Mona Lisa smeared with garbage or so
neglected that her canvas was tattered and faded. God has entrusted us
with the whole of his creation here on Earth, a work of art far more
valuable than the Mona Lisa. Christians should think twice before
littering and should recycle what resources they can.
More importantly, Genesis 1:1 should inspire Christians to have greater
love for their fellow man. All people, regardless of race, gender,
orientation or creed, are creations of God. Any of these superficial
differences between people are no more cause for hatred than are the
varying scents, shades and shapes of flowers. Imagine if God had only
created one type of flower or tree. This motif of diversity is present
in all of God's creation and diversity amongst humans is not a mistake.
The Bible has many more lessons for people willing to read with an open
heart. Even non-believers can find value from reading scripture and
incorporating the teachings of the Bible into their lives. Genesis 1:1
is literally just the beginning.
